How often should I clean my air ducts

Have you ever asked yourself “How often should I do air duct cleaning?”

At the same time, you may also realize that it’s been a long time since the last cleaning.

In fact, HVAC systems collect much more dust and dirt than it seems. The dirt that is collected in remote and invisible corners is dangerous to health and negatively affects the body even if you do not realize it and do not see it. We take care of your health and therefore, in this article we want to explain the harmful effect of dust on your health and advice on frequency you should clean your air ducts.

Ducts are ideal spots for accumulation of dust, dirt, pile and debris.

During air circulation, dust passes through filters, but they are sometimes not able to perfectly handle its task.

Therefore, the dirt sticks to the walls of pipes or accumulates in hard reachable areas.

What are the signs that the air ducts should be cleaned immediately?

First, we advise you to identify what exactly type of cleaning is required before deciding how often to clean your air ducts.

When you realize that the work of the HVAC system is ineffective, there is an unpleasant odor, or the house has gotten significantly dirtier, you should provide cleaning immediately.

How often should you clean air ducts?

We recommend cleaning every two to four years if you live in an apartment or house.  For commercial real estate, it is strongly recommended to check the air ducts and the entire HVAC system annually, as well to carry out scheduled cleaning. In general, office buildings, schools, universities, shopping malls, and other commercial facilities should be cleaned more often.

However, according to NADCA (National Air Cleaner Association), there are several reasons that affect the frequency of air duct cleaning

Because for some reason cleaning needs to be done more often!

    • Relocating

The first thing to take into account when moving into a new flat or house is an air duct!

Even if former residents have never cleaned their ducts, with professional cleaning, you can be certain that the air you are breathing is fresh and air ducts are definitely clean.

    • Pets

If you have a fluffy cat or a shaggy dog it affects the frequency of air duct cleaning.

Animals spread wool, which then enters the ducts.

If you have your favorite pet then make sure to clean and inspect the ducts at least once a year.

Hair accumulation in ducts obviously results in unpleasant effects.

The HVAC system performs significantly poorer and, in the worst case, raises the danger of fire.

The allergic or asthmatic reactions in the human body are triggered by the amount of wool in the ducts.

    • Recent fire or emergency situation

If the house recently suffered from an emergency situation (such as a fire) after which repair works were carried out, then we also recommend inspecting the air duct.

First, the system may have been damaged, and second, repair works contribute to the accumulation of dirt inside.

    • Indoor smoking

This is the last reason that affects how often you should clean your air ducts.

Smoking indoors is not a good idea, so try to avoid it.  A large amount of air passes through your air ducts every day, including dust and other particles that may stuck inside. If you smoke indoors, the effectiveness of the HVAC system will decline significantly.
